The Contoy Island National Park is located 30 kilometers north of Isla Mujeres, where the waters of the Caribbean Sea meet the Gulf of Mexico. Contoy Island Reef are part of the second longest Barrier Reef in the world, the Great Mesoamerican Reef.
Isla Contoy is the most important refuge of Seabirds of the Caribbean. Its lagoons, mangroves and low jungles are home to 152 species of birds recorded. In winter more than 10,000 birds including frigates, cormorants, birds bobo, herons, pelicans and terns coffee concentrate.
In the summer, three species of sea turtles come to the beaches of Contoy spawn: Hawksbill, Loggerhead and White. Of the 98 identified species of plants, especially Mangroves covering 70% of the surface of the island they have been preserved intact, and home to many species of birds, reptiles, crustaceans and fish.
Contoy Island is a protected area since 1961, decreed National Park in 1998. It is an uninhabited and administered by SEMARNAT CONANP dependent island, a visit to Contoy is a must in the agenda of every lover of nature.
